FDI plays a vital role in Indiaβs economic expansion by boosting capital inflow, employment, innovation, and infrastructure development.
In FY 2024β25, India recorded $81.04 billion in FDI, supported by liberal policies, simplified compliance, and automatic approvals in over 90% of sectors. Sectors such as services, IT, manufacturing, renewable energy, and healthcare continue to attract strong global participation.

Indiaβs FDI framework has transitioned from periodic RBI Master Circulars to a consolidated and transparent policy structure. The Consolidated FDI Policy Circular (October 15, 2020) replaced earlier versions and remains the foundational policy governing foreign investment.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) formulates FDI policies through Press Notes, circulars, and notifications. These are implemented under the FEMA (Non-Debt Instruments) Rules, 2019 by the Ministry of Finance. Press Notes become effective immediately unless specified otherwise, allowing swift policy adaptation.
